Gold Hallmark & BIS Guide
Since June 2021, BIS hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewelry sold in India. Learn how to read and verify hallmarks to protect yourself from impure gold.
What Does a Hallmark Contain?
BIS Logo
The triangular Bureau of Indian Standards logo — confirms the article is tested by a BIS-recognized center.
Purity Grade
The fineness number (e.g., 999 for 24K, 916 for 22K, 750 for 18K) indicating gold purity.
HUID
Hallmark Unique Identification Number — a 6-digit alphanumeric code unique to each piece of jewelry. Can be verified online.
How to Verify HUID Online
Visit the BIS Care app or manakonline.in website
Enter the 6-digit HUID printed on the jewelry
View details: jeweler name, purity grade, article type, and assaying center
If details don't match — report to BIS immediately
Red Flags to Watch
No BIS hallmark on gold jewelry — avoid purchasing
Blurred or unreadable hallmark stamps
Jeweler refuses to provide HUID or purchase receipt
Price significantly below market rate — likely impure
No KYC required for high-value gold purchases
